Does your child wear a night diaper to bed? Do you want to protect your child’s mattress from bouts of the flu and occasional oopsies! If so, would you like to save money, boost your child’s self esteem and be kinder to Mamma Nature? Read on…..

1. Money
FACT: A 30 pack of pull-up diapers costs between $20 to $30. A night diaper-wearing child typically goes through one pack per month.
FACT: A Twin size Oops! Sheet™ costs $80. An Oops! Sheet™ pays for itself within four months. And because it’s machine washable, it can be used again and again for years.
2. Your Child’s Self Esteem
FACT: Kids are proud when they transition to big kid undies and using the potty. Most are bummed to have to wear a night diaper. Some children are nervous to go to bed without a night diaper. They fear they’ll wet their bed, disappoint their parents, and possibly ruin their mattress.

3. Mamma Earth

FACT: Disposable diapers are the third largest consumer item in landfills.

18 Apr 2012One of the things that most of us all have to mark our children getting older is a growth chart. My son is 8 years old now and we made sure every year on his birthday we stood him against the wall to mark his height on his chart (did you know a ball point pen works best!). Although, now that I think back over the years, it’s great to look at other milestones or events in his life too and not just the birthdays.
So it got me thinking, what events/milestones/accomplishments do our children go through that you would mark on a growth chart?
Some ideas you could include:

16 Apr 2012Did you know that right here in our own backyard of Vancouver, BC there is an amazing company called Westcoast Baby? It was started by two mom’s, Amanda Moat and Nicole Vaslot, who wanted to design more simplistic and functional, yet stylish and colourful baby layettes.
Just one of the many great things about Westcoast Baby, is that much of the clothing in their collection is made of bamboo. What is so fantastic about bamboo? To name just a few, bamboo is soft as silk but extremely durable to handle the washer and dryer, it is hypo-allergenic, and it is highly absorbent, 3-4 times that of cotton. Not to mention, bamboo is a much more sustainable crop to grow than cotton and bamboo clothing is 100% biodegradable.
The look of Westcoast Baby‘s collection is just so simple and cute. They have designed the ultimate in comfortable baby wear. Who wouldn’t love snuggling a new baby in one of their Bamboo Coccoon Swaddlers or a Bamboo Infant Kimono Wrap?
In addition to their clothing collections, Westcoast Baby also has a wonderful All Natural Skincare line that would be essential to any mom. Their Belly Stick sounds so soothing (all of us moms remember our itchy growing bellies, right?).
Westcoast Baby has their products in several locations across Canada and the US or you can order directly from their website. They also have a Facebook page where they post lots of great info and have some fantastic give aways! They are such a wonderful and unique company so show your support and ‘Like’ their page. For more information on why bamboo is such a great alternative to cotton, please click here.

31 Mar 2012Easter is upon us and at this time of the year, many of us parents try to come up with some different and unique ways of marking the occasion with our family. Usually this entails dinners, brunches, crafts, Easter egg hunts, or various other traditions. In our family, we usually have an Easter dinner and a big egg hunt for all of the kids (although this year we all decided to forgo the cooking and do a family brunch out). For us though, it isn’t Easter without decorating some eggs. We usually buy the boxed egg dye at the stores but I find that by the end of it all, we have more dye on our skin than on the eggs! So this year I set out to find some egg decorating ideas that were maybe a bit more unique or at the very least, less messy.
There are a couple of great egg decorating ideas I came across that I love. Even though dying eggs can be so messy, I still love the look of the brightly coloured eggs but there had to be a more convenient way of doing it right? Yes, there is….and it’s so simple! A whisk! Why didn’t we figure this out a long time ago? Kudos to this mom for sharing.
Another idea as an alternative to egg dying is using different textiles for a beautiful outcome as Pottery Barn Kids demonstrated in their ideas for Easter. It may be a little difficult to actually eat the eggs after, but do they ever look pretty! I’m in love with the vintage type feel of these eggs.
One more simple, yet gorgeous idea I came across is something for your Easter breakfast/brunch/dinner table. Of course Martha Stewart would come up with something so pretty. I love how the delicate flowers mimic the delicate egg shells.
Easter is a time of year that we really cherish as there are so many fun things we do as a family. We would love to hear what your favourite Easter things/traditions are! Happy Easter to all of you from all of us here at Homeworks Etc. Designs.

27 Jun 2011How many times have our kids come home missing their juice containers, a sandwich container, or even a jacket? Then we go into the classroom to retrieve that juice container only to find that there are five sitting there in the lost and found that look exactly like the one your child lost so instead of guessing (ewww!) us moms just go and buy a new one. Well, with these fantastic, durable, yet stylish labels from Emily Press Labels we might not have to worry about guessing anymore!
Emily Press Labels, created and designed locally in Vancouver, BC, are designed to withstand practically anything from clothing labels that are washer and dryer safe, to labels for lunch and juice containers which are waterproof so they have no problem going through dishwasher cycles. They also have a glossy protective top coat so the labels will stay bright and visible and resist fading.
There are so many great styles to choose from so there will be a design that any child would love! Emily Press also has a great line of household labels to help you get organized around the home including spice labels, cord labels (who doesn’t need some of these!), and mealtime labels that would be great for the freezer.
Emily Press has something for everyone….have fun labeling!

12 May 2011Looking for a quick to make yet effective décor piece for your son or daughter’s room? We have a great DIY project for you! We have used an inexpensive shadow box from Ikea combined with a couple of our products here at Homeworks Etc.. There are literally endless possibilities with our shapes and letters! We have used the frame in a couple of ways, one utilizing the mat that the frame comes with and two without. Using the mat is a great way to showcase one really great object (like our princess crown!). Going without the mat allows you to add a letter and shape together like we did in our examples. We did the ‘f’ for frog and ‘c’ for castle but you could always use the first letter in your child’s name with the shape of their choice as well. The frame comes with an MDF backing that you can either paint or there are so many great designer papers out nowadays that you can just cut to size and you will have an instant beautiful background with a little glue. We used a grey/blue colour for our shadow boxes but there are so many colour combos or patterns that would look fantastic….you really are limitless. Let us know how we can help you put together your shadow box project!
