One of the big trends that I have been noticing a lot lately is owls! I seem to be seeing these beautiful creatures everywhere now in décor, jewelry, clothing, and card making/scrapbooking. We even have our own owls here at Homeworks Etc. Designs! It’s funny, in the early eighties when I was in my elementary school years (I realize I’m dating myself, lol) I remember my mom collecting various owl things from macramé owl wall hangings, carved wooden owls, beaded owls, etc., but the owls we are seeing in décor today have come a long way and are definitely not along the lines of my grandmother’s little owl-shaped soaps from way back when.

Sometimes it is hard to find just the right kind of décor piece we are looking for so quite often we will turn to a DIY project.  We came across this beautiful DIY canvas project that included…..OWLS! We are absolutely loving the gorgeous patterns that were used by Daffodil Design because it is so simple yet tasteful. These canvases would look perfect in a little girls room but depending on colours and patterns, they would also look wonderful in one of our own bedrooms, a family room or even a bathroom….as long as we try to stay away from the little matching owl soaps.

We at Homeworks Etc. Designs are absolutely loving this ABC inspired nursery. It was dreamed up by two art school grads and owners of their own graphic design company for their new baby boy. We particularly love the hand painted (yes, HAND painted!) alphabet design on the wall inspired by crib bedding by Dwell Studio. To make the painting task a bit easier they projected the image onto the wall….what a great idea! Nurseries such as this are so great because the decor tends to last a little longer without your child growing out of it so fast. When they hit the toddler stage, all you would have to do with this room is swap out a few accessories (maybe switch the chair for a cozy bean bag chair for a great reading corner) and in no time you would have a room any child would love!

Just ready to launch our monogrammed single hooks! Decorative and functional. Another personalize products from Homeworks Etc.

These are going in my girls bathroom for sure…maybe now they’ll hang their wet towels. So much easier for kids to use than those hard to reach towel bars. Can’t wait to see what you think? I look forward to reading your comments.

Here is a sneak peak at our new mini block sayings measuring 1×4 inches. So cute for a dresser, table top or mantle. Give these cute mini block notes as a gift to your kids in a lunch box or to your spouse for the office. They are just so adorable! More words and colors available soon….

Christmas may be over, but there’s no time for the January blues because we are really pleased to announce our Grand Opening!

We’ve got a big day planned and we would love to see you here.  On January 29th between 10am and 5pm we’ll be offering you great products, cupcakes, coffee and the first 50 people who visit the store will get a fantastic gift bag! (And you really do want this gift bag, my husband wants a gift bag) We’ll also be doing door prize draws throughout the day and we’ve got some great give aways of not just our own products but loads of local business have donated items, coupons and gift certificates so there’s lots of chances to win something! (For a full list and links to our donors please see our events page!)

We’re also really excited to let you know that for 3 days from January 29th to 31st (which includes all Grand Opening purchases) we’re going to donate 20% of all sales to Ronald McDonald House for Children! In case you don’t know, Ronald McDonald House is a place for the families of sick children to stay while they’re undergoing treatment at the Children’s Hospital.  It’s a “home away from home” where kids can be kids despite what illness they’re facing and their parent’s are able to be there with them at little or no cost.  We’re very happy to be able to do this and we hope you’ll join us in supporting a local charity.

Want to do more for the environment than just take your re-usable bags to the grocery store?  How about making your own gift wrap!

Artist Alisa Burke has created a great tutorial on sewing your own chic holiday wrap and posted it over at her blog.  She goes through using things you have around the house like brown paper bags, old books, spare bits of fabric and the simplest of stitches on a sewing machine to create beautiful and unique ways to present your gifts.  From simple stripes on plain paper, to free motion swirls on colourful felt getting that ‘Wow!’ factor is easy! And for those who might like to start small she has featured some cute gift tags that you could whip up in less than an hour.

So grab some fabric, cut some paper and get sewing!

Time sure flies when you’re having fun!

This autumn and been super busy for us with our big move to our new location! We’ve been hard at work getting our showroom ready and although our grand opening isn’t officially until January, we’re open for business Tuesday through Saturday with loads of great last minute gift ideas. We would love to see you so come down and check it out!

On to business, since we haven’t posted in so long we’ve got two things we want to share with you:

First up is a fantastic room design by Michele Anderson that she and her husband completed in a single weekend as a birthday surprise for their son Logan.

This room is a perfect example of what can be done with a little creativity and some hard work.  Michele’s husband did the awesome dinosaur mural using a projector and a transparency of the dinosaur skeleton and painting it all by hand. We love how a simple process can result in such a stunning and personalized piece!

Once you’ve taken in the mural, you begin to notice all the little details they added that take an idea and turn it into a room design. Orange dinosaur decals on the dresser and bedside table, and orange lava lamp, even a beta tank with, you guessed it, orange gravel, little things that tie everything together so nicely. Great job!

Learn more about Logan’s dinosaur room on Michele’s blog Pinkle Toes.

Learn more about using projectors to make wall murals here.

Second, we wanted to highlight a free downloadable Happy Birthday banner designed by the gurus over at anders ruff!

This would be such a cute and simple addition to any child’s birthday party, and best of all, it’s free! You simply print out the pennants, thread them along a ribbon or string and hang them wherever you like!  Download the version seen above here or you can get a ‘girlie’ version done in pink, red and green here. (FOR FREE!)

We liked this pennant banner so much we thought it might make an interesting new DIY kit with reusable mdf pennants, but we want to hear your feedback!  What would you do with your pennant banner? Leave your comment below or post on our Facebook wall or reply to us on Twitter, we would love to hear from you!

Pumpkin Carving Ideas

In: DIY

25 Oct 2010

We carved our pumpkins last night!  What a blast!  But before we started we googled for some easy ideas to carve with the kids.  We found this great site on HGTV.  Their style sheets were ideas and inspirations that my kids just loved!

Pumpkin Patterns

It wouldn’t be Hallowe’en without Pumpkins!  Get more ideas for your pumpkins at Country Living too.

Savannah stylist Liz Demos skipped the carving knife and went straight for a paintbrush to fashion these graphic pumpkins. “With a stark black-and-white palette,” Demos says of her trio of bold designs, “you can make any pattern, even creepy insects, look downright chic.”

Have a blast carving your pumpkins this year!  Whether you pick a design that is chic, classic or ghoulish, this DIY project is a Halloween craft that every child will enjoy!

When I read the itinerary at the PNE on opening day the first thing my kids wanted to do was see Bobs and Lolo.

And that is just what we did.  We entered the world of musical adventures in music, movement and make believe!   The sea of  kids sang the lyrics and grooved to the tunes for the entire show.

Bobs (Robyn) and Lolo (Lorraine) grew up on Vancouver Island and have backgrounds in education.  They care about teaching kids about the environment, their neighbours, the planet and themselves.  And they make it FUN!!!!  Sing, wiggle, clap, slide, glide…. this dynamic duo are great at what they do.

My kids dance around the living room singing: “I love bugs!  I love bugs!” from their Musical adventures soundtrack.  “Sea, Sea Lion” from Sea Notes is a popular tune that my girls love too.  The lyrics are easy to remember and they giggle when they find out how we study what Seal Lions eat.  Did you know you can watch their videos on Treehouse TV too!

Listen to lyrics, watch videos and purchase Bobs and Lolo CD’s online or at  childrens boutiques across Canada. Check out their events calender so you can plan to bring your family to a fun, interactive and entertaining show near you.
